OH! To Be Young Again - Creating Young Forests for Wildlife

Ecologists from the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission and the USDA Forest Service's Upland Hardwood Ecology Unit have published an article that underlines the importance of young forests in supporting diverse wildlife. Many researchers and managers are aware of the influx of diversity after a disturbance, but this article discusses the need for young forests from a management perspective. The authors touch on the sentiment of southern forests as "pristine, undisturbed, and unchanging..." but point out that young forests are at an historic low. The article closes with suggestions for land owners and managers who want to maintain forest diversity and create early successional habitats. The original article is available for download here.
